Tech Talk at the Street Fair

Being a first-time vendor at the Nyack Street Fair turned out to be a truly valuable experience. I had the opportunity to speak with many attendees who approached my table, picked up business cards, and shared their tech frustrations — exactly the kind of connections I hoped to make.

It was an early start — I arrived in Nyack by 7:00 AM to set up my booth. Thankfully, the process was made easier by the organizers, PJ’s Promotions, who allowed vendors to drive right up to their booth space to unload.

The fair officially opened at 10:00 AM, and within 30 minutes the street was bustling. Several attendees stopped by the MarcB IT booth to describe their ongoing computer issues and were eager to take a card.

One visitor mentioned her five-year-old desktop kept shutting down abruptly with a message saying it was entering power-saving mode. That may be a sign the CMOS battery on the motherboard needs replacement — a relatively simple but often-overlooked fix.

The “Guess the Cable” challenge was also a hit. I displayed six different cable types on the table, each marked with a letter. Attendees scanned a QR code to access a Google Form and tried to match the cable letters with the correct names — a fun and engaging way to start conversations.

Another attendee and her husband told me their printer had stopped responding entirely — no output from the computer or the printer itself. They were glad to take a card and said they’d be reaching out soon. That could make them the third client in a row with a printer issue — a trend I’m always happy to help solve!

As for my booth location — I was the last booth at the end of North Broadway. While I would’ve liked to be closer to the heart of the fair, it was still a productive spot. Some people passed by, but many walked the full length of the street and took time to stop and chat.

By the end of the day, I had just four business cards left — a great sign that real connections were made. I’m hopeful that I’ll soon be helping new clients troubleshoot, repair, and optimize their PCs, Macs, printers, and more.

I’m already looking forward to returning for the October Nyack Street Fair!
